A major problem faced by all Americans during World War II was the shortage of grocery and consumer goods. Many commodities, like meat, were given only to the military during the war and many imported goods were limited because of shipping losses. Production of many items was also stopped by the government if they were not deemed essential to the war effort. Most American made food, clothing, and equipment went to support the armed forces overseas, and what remained had to be shared by civilians. Thus, government rationing was put in place.
